Staircases

Wow, they plunge you into it quickly but I guess this kit isn't really meant as a beginner kit. The staircases were quite complex to build. There were risers and treads, banisters, and railings. Lots of intricate sanding.

Risers in place
Oops, I got one riser backwards. It didn't matter though because they all look the same now that they're stained.
Treads installed
It was during the assembly of the first staircase that I discovered that emery boards are the best thing ever! They make sanding so much easier on 1:12 scale dollhouse things!

Both Staircases Assembled

At this point I decided I better start staining pieces. I chose a Traditional Cherry stain to match our old farmhouse.

Both Staircases and Railing
Well that's them done. I'm quite pleased with the outcome even though there were a few minor pitfalls. I'm just learning all this dollhouse assembly stuff as I go along. I've joined a couple of groups in Facebook so I can learn from others too.

Thought I'd stain the first floor while I was at it. Most of these floors will be covered with various types of flooring but at least the wood is protected until that happens.

Next step in the assembly is window frames. Many, many window frames. Also, I have been making miniature accessories, so I will blog about those bits soon.

Bye for now,
From Little House on the Pinnacle.

The Kit Arrives

The kit arrives, all 50 pounds of it! The box is perfectly packed. There isn't one square inch of space left!

32 individual sheets of plywood, die cut pieces

Silk Screened Windows

4000 Cedar Shingles

The Work Area

This is the first area I set up in. I built the first floor and foundation on this table but I found that it was awkward working at the table.

Foundation

A friend suggested working at a shorter table with casters so it could be turned around easily so I asked my ever helpful hubby if he had such a thing. Lo and behold, the exact thing arrives in the house. It's a little steel tube work table on casters that he made. My hubby is a skilled metal fabricator. Comes in handy around here sometimes ;)

I don't have a photo of the table right now but you'll see it soon enough in this blog.

Front Door Step

The foundation with the first floor in place

Well that's it for the foundation and first floor. Onto the next part of the assembly; stair cases.

New Obsession

Like I needed another obsession but alas, here it is. Dollhouse miniatures!

Over 30 years ago, when we were first married, I really wanted to build this big Victorian Dollhouse but I could never justify the cost or space and then I had 3 sons so I put the thought at the back of my brain where apparently it festered out of control :D

Last November I finally took the plunge and ordered my dollhouse kit from The Little Dollhouse Company in Toronto.

I put some time into it before Christmas but then got really busy with cookie making and other Christmas preparations.

This blog will be dedicated to the dollhouse assembly and all the little bits that are involved. I've also started making scale miniature furniture and other bits. It's a lot of fun! Can't wait to share my experience.

The following are screen shots from The Little Dollhouse Company's web site.
